DrSlade at graduationCongratulations to HOPE Scholar (2021), Dr Cassandra Slade on her recent graduation.

Cassie's PhD focused on osteoarthritis as a quarter of people over 40 experience osteoarthritis in their knee. The New Zealand GreenShell Mussel has a selection of nutrients which potentially have a positive effect on osteoarthritis which may benefit those with knee osteoarthritis.

Cassie ran a six-month trial where participants (aged 55-80 years) received either GreenShell Mussel powder or a placebo of pea protein. The participants did not know which treatment they were receiving.

The research identified inflammatory markers involved in osteoarthritis pathogenesis and showed GreenShell Mussel consumption may be cartilage protective and improve symptoms and functionality in those with early knee osteoarthritis. Cassie's recent publication on her study can be accessed here.

Currently, Dr Slade is undertaken further study for registration as a Dietitian.
