Dear HOPE Foundation Donors,

I would like to thank you for offering me a HOPE Foundation Scholarship for Research on Ageing.

The scholarship will enable me to research a topic that I am passionate about and feel there needs to be a lot more research on. The title of my research is “Equitable access in the event of flooding for people who face mobility barriers”. I am particularly passionate about inclusion of minorities in hazard and climate change planning; this is something that I have wanted to pivot my career towards for a while, and your funding is making the transition easier and more enjoyable!

It was spending a year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia that opened my eyes to how many barriers there are in the built environment for those that have mobility challenges. As urbanisation and climate change adaptation occurs, I would like to see these barriers reduced. As my Masters thesis is in partnership with Christchurch City Council, I am optimistic that my research will be utilised.

I feel my area of research does not get the attention it needs and feel a sense of urgency with Aotearoa’s aging population. I commend you and thank you for trusting me by providing funding to this research.

I look forward to sharing what I discover with you.

Yours sincerely,

Emily Ward
