Kia ora koutou,

Re: HOPE Foundation Scholarship for Research on Ageing: University of Canterbury

I would like to express my sincere thanks for offering me a University of Canterbury 2022 HOPE Foundation Scholarship for Research on Ageing.

My PhD project, “MRI- and EEG-derived biological markers of cognitive health in Parkinson’s disease”, will consider whether underlying brain changes seen in Parkinson’s disease patients can explain why some patients progress to Parkinson’s disease dementia while others remain resistant to such decline. I am undertaking this research as part of a multidisciplinary group at the Christchurch-based New Zealand Brain Research Institute (NZBRI) as a University of Canterbury student.

I was excited to learn I have been awarded this distinction and am encouraged research into neurodegenerative disorders has been considered deserving of this support. This scholarship will lower the financial burden of my study and support costs associated with travelling to presenting my findings both in New Zealand and internationally. I will be eager to share my findings with the HOPE Foundation in due course.

Ngā mihi nui,
Nicola Slater
