These scholarships are awarded to support high achieving University students to do an ageing focused research project over the 10-week summer break. The aim is not only to achieve high quality worthwhile research, but also to enable these students to gain valuable skills, by working with experienced researchers, who supervise these projects. This year we have awarded one Summer Scholarship.

2016-17 Summer Students

Since 1995 the HOPE Foundation has awarded 35 Summer Studentships. Last year the title was changed to Summer Scholarships and the grant increased to $5500 per student. These scholarships are designed to encourage undergraduate students, showing promise as researchers, to undertake research projects during their summer break. The hope is that when they graduate they will undertake research based post graduate studies. These scholarships are in addition to the 63 scholarships we have awarded to post graduate students since our inception.

The cornerstone funding from the Selwyn Foundation plus additional grants from Family Trusts have enabled us to extend our grants to a record number of nine scholarships and two summer studentships.

The cornerstone funding from the Selwyn Foundation plus additional grants from Family Trusts have enabled us to extend our grants to researchers in 2015. Specifically this has meant one extra Scholar for the Universities of Auckland and Massey plus for the first time a grant to a University of Canterbury Scholar.

This year the Summer Students’ presentation followed the AGM of the NZAG held on Monday, 19th August at Massey University Albany. Joan-Mary Longcroft, Linda Snell and I attended from the Friends Committee. We particularly enjoyed meeting the two students and seeing their presentations.
